I agree with your views, I too found Nikon too much arrogant as far as handling customer care is concerned. I purchased a NIKON SLR camera and had to pay heavy price for same. I gifted the same to my daughter on her birth day. Unfortunately the camera had problem for unknown reason (malfunction with 2 buttons).
I immediately rushed to nearby service centre the person kept the camera for 3 weeks and did not do anything later he said that they no more provide service for Nikon cameras. I had to contact Nikon customer care and as they suggested delivered the camera to another service centre and as I delivered the personal from that service centre accepted and said service will be done under warranty. After 24 hours the same person called me and told that the problem happened due to water entry (as there are water mark on body of camera and lense) I told how can this happen we never went for outdoor photography. Though we pleaded all our request fell on deaf ear and the same man demanded money when I told as we never mishandled the problem may be manufacturing defect so should be covered under warranty. But the man was not listening.
I called Nikon service centre without even listening to my part of story they told I have to abide by decision of service personal.
I reviewed net and came upon similar incidence with some customer who had identical issues with camera and as they threatened to take the matter to court the customer care personal from Nikon obliged and repaired the product without charge. This shows how ethical is Nikon and their arrogance towards customers.
